Calling all movie buffs! Trying to figure out this movie, please help.?

I saw this movie on tv about 10 years ago or so and it has been driving me nuts trying to figure out what it is. My memory is pretty fuzzy but this is what I remember: The lead character is a man whose wife has just died and he uses her paintings to enter the afterlife and try to find her. I thought God was played by Morgan Freeman but I can't seem to find a movie where he fits. The end involves the man battling the underworld/hell and a scene in a crumbling stone crypt/building to save his wife. There is also a scene where the man is in a boat paddling across a body of water and there are souls or something in the water.
