How do you get rid of scars?

I used to cut, and now I have a bunch of scars on my wrist. It's really awkward when my friends or family see it because I don't really know what to say, and usually end up giving a vague and kind of far-fetched excuse. I know a lot of people say that using Vitamin E or Aloe Vera or Cocoa Butter helps, but I'm a teenager and I can't exactly go up to my parents and ask them to get these things for no reason. I'm wondering if there are any other ways to get rid of scars (not cover them up) using things that I can find around the house, or if there are any methods that will help me get rid of my scars?
