Is it the right time to buy a free hold property for investment?

I m a clerical staff, I dont earn much n have aged parents to support. Would it be a good idea to invest in property than in some FD where the interest gain is so small. I m thinking of a small apartment that can fetch easy rental. At least I can have more cash flow n larger profit. Any opinion?
